And yes, I almost resent being forced to “buy,” one, because it will be bundled with the new console. The Kinect simply wasn’t good or accurate enough as a controller for that game and others, and it marred my experience to the point where I’m leery about even the next generation, without extensively testing it out. In reviewing games, I’ve had multiple bad experiences with the Kinect, including my panning of the Kinect-only flop, Fable: The Journey last year. What they don’t want is a Zune-like approach that forces them to behave a certain way - like having no choice but to buy and use the Kinect or to have their console check in once a day by being online. Very few gamers I know would object to jaw-dropping new technology that vastly improves their gaming experience. To sum up some of the criticisms voiced to me and in online forums, gamers objected to Microsoft trying to sell them on a vision they claimed didn’t put gaming at the center.
